Satir Fundamentals

This is a self-study course. Thank you for joining! We will present what we think are key concepts for understanding and using Satir's methods. This course was created by Sharon Loeschen and Stephen Buckbee.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will earn 6 CE hours. The Virginia Satir Global Network has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider.  ACEP #5224.  Programs that do not qualify for the NBCC credit are clearly identified.  VSGN is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Stephen Buckbee, LSW, LPC, M.ED., has a broad range of experience in the social service field, including being a counselor for families of addictions, an emergency services counselor and a professor of Sociology at Bay de Noc College in Michigan for twenty-four years.  He began learning from Virginia in 1986 and from there he partnered with Michael Dupont and Dan Doyle to establish BDD Associates and together they have trained thousands of persons in Satir concepts over the years.  In addition, he is faculty of the Banmen China Management Center, where he trains professionals in the social service and educational fields.

Sharon Loeschen, LCSW, has worked as a clinical social worker for 37 years, practicing at Family Service of Long Beach, California, for thirty of those years and is now in private practice.  During this time, she also taught in the Marriage and Family Therapy program at California State University for 19 years.  As with Stephen, Sharon began learning from Virginia in 1986 and from there has gone on to share her teachings through her books, The Satir Process, Systematic Training in The Skills of Virginia Satir and Enriching Your Relationship with Yourself and Others.

During this course, the student will be introduced to the core concepts of Virginia Satir's work.  The course begins with Satir’s concept of the different ways of viewing the world, proposing that the world has historically operated from a Threat and Reward Model of dominance and conformity and needs to move to a Seed/Growth Model where people are viewed as equal in value and celebrated for their uniqueness.

After which, you will learn about Satir’s understanding of the universality of being human; the influence of the family of origin on relationships; the systemic process of the family; the importance of helping people access their inner resources and their self-worth.

Satir worked on these tapes before the end of her life she was very interested in demonstrating her process as well as the underpinnings of her work.

The quality of the videos is fair, but the content is pure gold.  Take your time.

The course ends with a focus on the universal process of change and the role of the therapist.

The learning objectives for the course are, that the student will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between the Threat and Reward Model and the Seed Model.
